Sewage Disposal in Soil
Abstract in English
The sewage or effluents disposal in soil may mean treatment, final disposition or agricultural irrigation. One of the biggest issues is the capacity of survival and moving of the potentially pathogenic microorganisms in the sewage: viruses, bacteria, protozoan cysts and helminthes eggs and larvae. The research was carried out at the Sewage Treatment Plant in Populina, SP, which treatment method is the overland flow. The specific aims of this work were: to research helminthes eggs and larvae, colifagos, Salmonella sp. in soil, sewage and effluent, as well as determine total coliforms and E. coli in the sewage and effluent. Through bibliographic compilation the aspects referring to agricultural reuse were seem considering the potentiality and the limitations of this technique mainly referring to a possible sickness dissemination sources as well as damage and contamination of the environments. The results have shown that the system was capable to reduce the number of helminthes eggs and larvae in the final effluent and that they are found in a bigger number on the soil surface and in twenty meters from the point of appliance of sewage. It is likely that the humidity has a certain influence on the viability of Ascaris eggs. The system was not efficient on the remova I colifagos, Salmonella sp., total coliform and E. coli. The works of the treatment plant can be considered a risk group beca use they have direct contact with the soil and effluent. This work recommends the continuity of the studies on the survival and moving of helminthes eggs and larvae in soil; new researches on colifagos and Salmonella sp. in order to get to know the capacity of this treatment method to remove these microorganisms; the monitoring of the effIuent and receiving body regarding the presence of Salmonella sp., colifagos, total coliform and E. coli; and the development of a methodology for determination of colifagos in soil.
