Keywords in Portuguese

Tratamento de Esgotos

Influence of leachate inputs from the sanitary landfills of São Paulo Metropolitan Region into the wastewater treatment plants of the integrated system

Wastewater Treatment
Abstract in English
Lately, it is noticed a significant increase in the quantity of leachate received by the wastewater treatment plants - WTPs originating from the municipal landfills of the City of São Paulo, as well as an increase in the number of landfills operated by the private sector that resort to the public wastewater treatment plants to dispose of effluents generated by their facilities. In order to measure the present and future availability of the wastewater treatment plants of the SPMR integrated system to receive this leachate, it has been considered how much its quality has to do with its production process and its specific characteristics related to the landfill age and to the rainfall rate, so that it is verified the sustainability of the receiving leachate along the time. This assessment will be carried out in terms of the leachate volume and its organic load, including an evaluation of Cadmium, Lead, Copper, Total Chromium, Zinc, Nickel, and Phenol contributions from the leachate. The methodology consisted of the determination of the maximum pollutant load that the plants can receive without affecting the biological treatment processes and the final disposal of the resulting sludge and effluent, using the TOXCHEM+ mathematical model. Following that, the affluent load of these pollutants already received by the plants was calculated and the portion of this load corresponding to the leachate input was determined. The methodology applied consisted of the determination of the maximum pollutant load that the plants can receive without affecting the biological treatment processes and the final disposal of the resulting sludge and effluent, using the TOXCHEM+ mathematical model. Following that, the affluent load of these pollutants already received by the plants was calculated and the portion of this load·corresponding to the leachate input was determined. Regardless of their substantial growth, the results show that these contributions are not representative in terms of volume, when compared with the wastewater volumes treated by the WTPs. However, the figures corresponding to the organic loads are very significant, exceeding 9% in Barueri WTP and 4% in Suzano WTP.
