O autor, depois de apresentar uma visão geral da problemática dos resíduos sólidos, procede a uma revisão da literatura especializada, buscando implicações do uso generalizado do triturador doméstico. Observou, então, que os serviços da limpeza pública, em grandes cidades, não sofreriam sensíveis reduções da seus custos, ao contrário de pequenas comunidades que, certamente, teriam gastos com serviços da coleta sensivelmente reduzidos. Há evidências de que as redes coletoras da esgotos sofreriam obstruções em consequência do aumento de gorduras a detergentes nos esgotos. O consumo de água nas habitações equipadas com trituradores não seria ponderavelmente alterado. Não se observou, também, relação muito clara entre o uso do triturador e a eliminação de moscas e roedores. Há, todavia, indicações mais precisas com referência às sobrecargas nas estações de tratamento de esgotos. Concluiu, em vista das controvérsias sobre o assunto, serem necessárias outras abordagens mais detalhadas, mormente, para as condições locais.

After presenting a general view of the problems referring to solid wastes, the author reviews the specialized literature in order to focus publications dealing with the general application of the domestic garbage grinder. It has been pointed out that the costs of public cleaning services in big cities would not be reduced whereas in small towns the costs of collection services would be widely reduced. There has been evidence that the sewerage systems would clog up with the increase of grease and detergent. Water consumption in homes where garbage grinders are used would not be altered considerably. Also, a clear-cut relationship between the use of the garbage grinder and the elimination of flies and rodents has not been observed. However, there is more precise literature concerning the overload of waste treatment plants. In view of the dispute about this matter, the paper comes to the conclusion that a more detailed approach is necessary, mainly because of local circunstances.
