Realizou-se um estudo teórico sobre a sustentabilidade e seus desafios éticos. Foi feita uma pesquisa empírica com educadores para conhecer e inter-relacionar valores, atitudes e ações educativas em meio ambiente e educação ambiental. Um levantamento foi realizado numa amostra de 305 educadores. Aplicou-se questionário estruturado. Os domínios relacionados aos valores ambientais, foram identificados por análise fatorial e método de componentes principais com rotação varimax. Criaram-se índices para a dimensão de valores, atuação do educador em educação ambiental, importância atribuída à educação ambiental e fatores limitantes. Sua consistência foi analisada pelo alfa de Crombach e suas correlações pelos coeficientes de correlação linear de Pearson e Spearman. Identificaram-se seis dimensões de fatores: ecocêntricos, científicos, instrumentais, humanísticos; urbanísticos, antropocêntricos. Os índices alfa de Crombach foram estatisticamente consistentes. Grande parte dos educadores possui um sistema de valores ecocêntrico, preocupa-se com a preservação ambiental, acredita que a educação ambiental é um componente fundamental , mas poucos a exercem. Foram apontadas barreiras para o engajamento destes profissionais. Encontraram-se correlações estatisticamente significativas entre os valores ambientais, a importância que o educador atribui à educação ambiental e sua atuação em educação ambiental. Fatores correlacionados com valores contrários à preservação do meio ambiente correlacionam-se negativamente com a atuação em educação ambiental. Comparações com dados da literatura indicam que outras variáveis como o conhecimento em ecologia, a motivação pessoal, o conhecimento de estratégias de ação ambiental, a autoestima, o poder pessoal, influenciam cidadania dos indivíduos, devendo ser trabalhadas na formação de educadores.

A theoretical study was made about sustainability and its ethic challenges. It was made a research with 305 educators, with a structured questionnaire, in order to understand the knowledge of values, attitudes and educational actions regarding the environment and the environmental education. The method of principal components with varimax rotation and factor analysis were used in order to identify fields related to environmental values. Those indexes were created: value dimension, teacher action in environmental education, importance given to environmental education and limiting factors. The method used in the index consistency was the Alfa Crombach. The correlations was analyzed though Person and Spearman linear correlation coefficient. It was identified six values dimensions: ecocentrics, scientific, instrumental, humanistic, urbanistic and anthropocentric. The Alfa Crombach was statistically reliable. The majority of educators have an ecocentric value system, ethically concerned with environmental education and believe that environmental education is essential. Few act according to those principles. The study pointed out the barriers related to the mobilization of those professionals. Significant statistic correlations were found among environmental values, the importance attributed by the educator to environmental education and his action in environmental education. Factors related to values contrary to the environmental preservation had a negative correlation with the indexes of action in environmental education. The comparisons with the literature pointed out other variables, such as a conceptual knowledge in ecology, personal motivation, knowledge of strategies concerning environmental action, self-esteem and empowerment had great influence in the environmental citizenship, and must be developed in trainings.
