Objetivo. Verificar o efeito de um curso de educação nutricional para prevenção e redução da prevalência de sobrepeso em adolescentes. Selecionaram-se duas escolas públicas de ensino médio: uma Experimental e outra Controle. Métodos. A ação educativa ocorreu somente na escola Experimental. O grupo estudado constituiu-se de 76 (Experimental) e 105 (Controle) alunos, compondo-se de 40% do sexo masculino e 60% do sexo feminino. A idade média foi de 16 anos. O estudo realizou-se em 3 fases: caracterização dos adolescentes e obtenção dos dados antropométricos; ação educativa e avaliação nutricional. Utilizou-se teste t para comparação entre as médias do grupo e qui-quadrado para associações entre as variáveis. Resultados. Na primeira coleta de dados, na escola Experimental encontrou-se prevalência de sobrepeso em 5,7% dos meninos e de 13% para as meninas; obesidade em 5,7% dos meninos. Na escola Controle, prevalência de: sobrepeso em 9,1% dos meninos e 8,4% das meninas; obesidade em 3,6% das meninas. Na segunda coleta (8 meses após a primeira) detectou-se sobrepeso em 3,8% dos meninos e 14,2% das meninas e obesidade em 7,6% dos meninos da escola Experimental. Nessa mesma época registrou-se para a escola Controle, prevalência de sobrepeso foi de 8,1% para os meninos e 7,6% para as meninas e obesidade em 6,1% das meninas. Não foram detectadas diferenças estatisticamente significativas de sobrepeso e obesidade entre as escolas. Conclusões. A alteração alimentar pode ser observada em um pequeno número de alunos, não tendo sido verificada repercussão estatística para a população estudada. Os temas mais apreciados pelos adolescentes foram aqueles relacionados à aparência física.

There were selected two public middle schools: one Experimental and another one, Control. Methods. The educative action was taken exclusively in the Experimental school. The study population was of 76 (Experimental) e 105 (Control) students respectively, being 40% males, and 60% females. The age average was 16 years old. The research was done in 3 phases: teenagers' characterization e collection of anthropometric data; educative action and nutricional analysis. A test t was used for comparison between the group averages and chi-square for association amongst variables. Results. In the first data collection at the Experimental school it was found prevalence of: overweight in 5.7% of the boys and 13% of the girls; obesity in 5.7% of the boys. In the Control, school, prevalence of overweight in 9.1% of the boys and 8.4% of the girls; obesity in 3.6% of the girls. On the second data collection (8 months after the first) it was found overweight in 3.8% of the boys and 14.2% of the girls and obesity in 7.6% of the boys of the Experimental school. At this same time it was registered at the Control school, prevalence of overweight of 8.1% for the boys and 7.6% for the girls and obesity of 6.1% of the girls. It was not detected differences statistically significant of overweight and obesity between the schools. Conclusions. The diet alteration can be observed in a small number of students and a statistical impact was not verified in the population studied. The teenagers' favorite subjects were related to the physical look.
