Abstract in English
Objective. To evaluate the nutritional state of elder people with and without cognitives disturbs, living in a geriatric institution in the city of Bragança Paulista. Casuistry and methods. This search caracterized itself for being descritive and transversal, that utilized primary data colected in the period between november 2001 and february of 2002. The variables analysies were: sex, age, cognitives disturbs, schooling, Activities of Daily Living (AD), internation period, arm circunference (AC), triceps skinfold thickness (TSF), subscapular skinfold thickness (SSF), body mass index (BMI), arm muscle area (AMA). Results. Were studied 72 elder people from both sexs, between 65 and 90 years of age. Cognitives disturbs were observed in 40.3% of elders (69.0% of female sex). It was observed higher proportion (34.5%) of elder with cognitive disturbs in the age group between 85 and 90 years of age. In ADL 69.0% of these elder people were dependents and 62.1 % were iIIiterate person with an internation period of 7.6 ± 4.7 years. The nutritional evaluation indicated high percentual of elder with values of AC, TSF, BMI, and AMA lower from adequateness criterion, indicating proteic-caloric undernutrition in this group, principally mal e and between the age group of 80 to 90 years old (both sexs) presented higher nutritional riscs. Higher proportion (27.9%) of elders without cognitives disturbs were between 70 to 74 years of age. At ADL, 86.0% were independents, and 62.8% presented lower to midium schooling, and internation period similar (7.4 ± 3.9 years) to elder with cognitives disturbs. The evaluation of nutritional state showed high percentual of elder people with values of AC and AMA under adequateness criterion, principally on male sex, indicating probable proteic-caloric undernutrition in this group. Conclusions. Considering the results obteined as to the anthropometrics variables, it was concluded that on elder groups with cognitive disturbs the age group of 80 to 90 years of age and the male sex, presented the highest nutritional risc to proteic-caloric undernutrition. On elder without cognitives disturbs, men, independently from the age group, presented highest nutritional risc to proteic-caloric undernutrition.
