Abstract in English
Objective: To describe the adolescents food intake in Southwestem region of São Paulo city, according to socioeconomic, demographic and lifestyle patterns. Methodology: Cross-sectional population-based study of a sample of 795 adolescents aged from 12 to 19 years who were included in the Household Heath Survey (ISA-SP), conducted from January 2001 to September 2002. Dietary intake was measured through the 24-hour recall method. Multiple linear regression analysis for energy and macronutrients were performed to identify the related factors. Results: Among the adolescents sample, 51% were male and 56% were between the 5th and 8th degree of basic education. High percentage (21.4%) of sedentarity or insufficient physical activity practices was found and a prevalence of 11.2% of overweight and 3.1 % of obesity. The mean energy consumption was different among sexes: 1812.65kcal for girls and 2300.30kcal for boys. The total caloric value distribution was 14% of proteins, 50.2% of carbohydrates and 36.3% of lipids. The Body Mass Index (BMI) was inversely related to energy and macronutrients consumption. The energy consumption was correlated to physical activity practices, BMI and social indicators. The per capita income was correlated with all consumption variables, but was only significant in the model which explains the proteins. Conclusions: It was verified that the studied adolescents nutrition and food consumption patterns have a relationship with socioeconomic, anthropometrics and lifestyle variables. The knowledge of those factors becomes important for an implementation of health public politics for the improvement of adolescents nutrition and life patterns.
