Objetivo: Analisar a prática de utilização Classificação Internacional de Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saúde -- CIF, da Organização Mundial da Saúde, identificando e classificando o estado funcional, as estruturas do corpo afetadas, as limitações e as restrições de participação em atividades e os fatores ambientais que envolvem a vida diária das pessoas portadoras de deficiências do aparelho locomotor. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo epidemiológico transversal, descritivo-analítico. A amostra foi constituída por 40 pacientes em fase final de reabilitação de sequelas de doenças crônicas e de lesões por causas externas em um hospital público. Foram analisadas as variáveis sexo, idade, escolaridade, ocupação, diagnósticos codificados pela Classificação Estatística Internacional de Doenças e Problemas: Relacionados à Saúde- CID-10, funções e estruturas do corpo, participação e fatores ambientais codificados pela CIF. Resultados: A maioria dos entrevistados apresentou sequelas de agressões por arma de fogo e de acidentes de trânsito (67,5%). A estrutura afetada foi principalmente a medula espinhal torácica (47,5%). As principais deficiências foram relacionadas às funções de continência urinária, continência fecal, de força e de tônus musculares. Conclusões: A CIF significa um avanço em direção às propostas de entender as necessidades e as condições específicas em que as pessoas com alguma deficiência nas funções do corpo estão inseridas no ambiente, em seus aspectos naturais, tecnológicos e sociais. Constitui-se em ferramenta que permite fazer uma avaliação multidimensional da funcionalidade dos pacientes com deficiências físicas e/ou mentais. Embora seja de bastante utilidade na classificação sistemática dos diagnósticos dos pacientes, é de difícil aplicação e seu uso está restrito a comunidades com alto grau de desenvolvimento político e institucional.

Objective: The aim of this study was to verify the use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health -- ICF, in order to identify the impairments of the body structure, disabilities or disturbances at the level of the person and the interaction with and adaptation to the individual's surroundings. Methods: It is a transversal epidemiological study with a total of 40 inpatients in final phase of rehabilitation treatment at a public hospital. The analysed variables wererelated to sex, age, educational level, occupation, codes from the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems -- ICD-10 and from ICF. Diseases, impairments of body functions and of body structures had been related to activity limitations and to participation restriction. Results: The majority of the interviewed patients presented sequels of assault by firearm and of land transport accidents (67.5%). The affected structure was mainly the spinal cord and peripheral nerves (47.5%). The main impairments had been related to the urination functions, defecation, muscle power and muscle tone. Conclusions: The ICF means an advance in route to the proposals to understand the specific necessities and conditions where people with some disability on the functions of the body are inserted in the environment, in its natural, technological and social aspects. It is an important tool that can lead to a multidimensional evaluation of the functionality of the patients with physical and/or mental disabilities. Although the ICF is an attempt to produce a systematic classification of the consequences of injuries and diseases, it's difficult to apply its codes, especially in communities with a low level of political and institucional development.
