Abstract in English
511 patients with pulllonary mycobacterial disease interned at Belem and Partenon Sanatories in Porto Alegre, between August 1971 and January 1972, were simultaneously tested with PPD-S, PPD-Y, PPD-G and PPD-B antigens, respectively correspondent to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis and to atypical acid-fast bacilli representing the three first groups of Runyon's classification. From the 108 patients I that presented reaction to the atypical mycobacterial antigen equal or larger than the one referring to the standard tuberculin, it was collected pulmonary secretion to make the bacillary classification. Mycobacterium tuberculosis was isolated as the originator and also the only agent of the pneumopathies of 84 of these patients and it was probably the agent of the other 24 cases. Atypical acid-fast bacilli were not isolated. Associating that was obtained in this research to other two investigations developed in Brazil, it is possible to presume that pneumopathies due to the atypical acid-fast bacilli are infrequent in our environment. Since the tested group included only individuals with pulmonary tuberculosis, it was also possible to make a study of the specificity of the reactions to the four antigens and the existing correlation among them in tuberculous patients through the analysis of the reactions distribution.
