Abstract in English
This study describes a population of 12,782 live births from nine maternity-hospitals, and some of their characteristics related to the time they were hospitalized. The newborns were divided in two groups: one for early neonatal deaths and the other for live births. Data on birthweight, pathology, mortality as maternal age, prenatal care and delivery are described for both groups. Early neonatal mortality rates were calculated and called "minimum" because they referred to deaths occured only during hospitalization. In this study early neonatal mortality was 18,85 per 1000 live births. There was an incidence of 11,1 per cent of low birthweight which had 115 per 1000 live births for mortality by birthweight; 17,4 per cent of all the women that were under 20 years old and 9,7 per cent of mothers aged 35 years and over. Only 70,2% of all births were term deliveries and 60,2 per cent were vaginal. Prenatal care (considering at least 3 consultations) were done by 57,8 per cent of mothers. Perinatal jaundice, hypoxia, anoxia and hyaline membrane had high incidence in newborns during hospitalization. First day of life mortality rate was 6,9 per 1000 live births, decreasing for the following days of life, untill the minimum of 0,2 per 1000 live births for the 6th day of life. Among the most frequente causes of death were anoxia, hypoxia and other respiratory conditions followed by congenital anomalies and maternal conditions affecting newborn.
