Abstract in English
Accidents and violence are among the principal causes of morbidity and mortality, so much so that their increase is seen as a grave Public Health problem. Deaths from external, causes occupy the second place among causes of death in Brazil. Although the larger part is of young men an increase is also to be seen among women. The objective of this study is to review deaths from external causes among women of between 10 and 49 years of age in Brazilian State capitals in the first semester of 2002 on the basis of the "Study of Mortality among Women of from 10 to 49 years of age" of Laurenti et al's project "Pregnancy, Childbirth and Puerperium". They were the third cause of death among this population, with a mortality rate of 16.2/100.000 women. Homicides, traffic accidents and suicides were the main types. Firearms were the means most frequently used among the homicides; traffic accidents mainly involved pedestrians who where run over and among cases of suicide the use of pesticides and drugs predominated. There was reference made in the respective family circle, to some mental disturbance with regarder to 43.4% of the cases of suicide, 71 % of these reference being to depression. Death by violent causes during the pregnancy/puerperal cycles (i.e. during pregnancy or up to 364 days after the birth) accounted for 6.7% of the total, 57.3% of then being homicides and 28.9% suicides. Among the suicides, depression was quarted with regard to 50% of pregnant women and to 60% among mothers who had given birth within the previous year.
