Pelo campo da Etnopsicologia e sob um delineamento metodológico desenvolvido pelo filósofo português Fernando Gil acerca dos estudos das Controvérsias acadêmicas, pretende-se estudar a controvérsia entre Marshall Sahlins e Gananath Obeyesekere. Segundo a perspectiva etnopsicológica, como usada no laboratório de Etnopsicologia da FFCL-RP da USP, deve haver uma Escuta Participante, uma forma de dar voz aos participantes de sua pesquisa através da escuta psicanalítica, assim a escuta analítica também deve se aplicar ao texto e, principalmente, à própria controvérsia, com isso essa escuta será usada com ferramenta de interpretação, um operador dos dados teóricos, não a escuta participante em si, mas a noção de escuta analítica. Tal controvérsia teve início após Sahlins palestrar em Liverpool sobre um evento histórico, a chegada de Capitão Cook e as embarcações inglesas nas ilhas havaianas, Obeyesekere o questionou sobre sua interpretação dos fatos ocorridos. Os ingleses chegaram nas ilhas havaianas e foram recebidos e tratados como divindades, Cook foi visto como um deus havaiano chamado Lono, contudo após uma breve saída das ilhas e um rápido retorno a situação se transformou repentinamente e Cook foi morto pelos nativos. Sahlins interpreta isso por uma chave analítica histórica, buscando sentido na história cronológica e na história mítica. Obeyesekere utiliza a psicanálise, de modo geral Freud, para entender que há naquele momento situações que envolvem muito mais questões acerca do sujeito e do subjetivo e que eles não são ingênuos escravos de uma força dominadora cultural. Para esse fim buscou-se primeiro compreender, de forma razoável, as principais obras teóricas de cada autor em separado, para posteriormente adentrar às obras relativas à controvérsia em si e os principais autores que a discutiram. Como resultado observou-se que ao longo de décadas essa controvérsia foi reduzida a uma briga pessoal e poucos se debruçaram em compreender o embate teórico, se aliando cegamente a um lado ou outro. A escuta do texto permitiu uma visão criativa e completa da controvérsia em si como produto singular e deu luz às possibilidades de compreensão da Subjetividade e do sujeito outro na intersecção entre Psicanálise e Antropologia.

In the field of Ethnopsychology and under a methodological design developed by Portuguese philosopher Fernando Gil on the study of academic controversies, we intend to study the controversy between Marshall Sahlins and Gananath Obeyesekere. From the ethnopsychological point of view, used in the USF FFCL-RP's ethnopsychology laboratory, there must be a Participant Listening, a way of giving voice to the participants in their research through psychoanalytic listening, so that analytic listening also applies to the text. and especially the controversy itself, with this, this listening will be used as a tool of interpretation, an operator of theoretical data, not the participant listening itself, but the notion of analytical listening. Such controversy began after Sahlins gave a talk in Liverpool about a historic event, the arrival of Captain Cook and English ships on the Hawaiian Islands, Obeyesekere questioned him about his interpretation of the facts. The English arrived on the Hawaiian Islands and were received and treated as deities. Cook was seen as a Hawaiian god named Lono, however, after a brief departure from the islands and a quick return, the situation suddenly changed and Cook was killed by the natives. Sahlins interprets this by a historical analytical key, seeking meaning in chronological history and mythical history. Obeyesekere uses psychoanalysis, usually Freud, to understand that there are at that moment situations that involve much more questions about the subject and the subject and are not naive slaves to a culturally dominant force. To this end, it was first sought to understand, reasonably, the main theoretical works of each author separately, to later insert the works related to the controversy itself and the main authors who discussed it. As a result, it was observed that over the course of decades this controversy has been reduced to a personal fight and few have bent on understanding the theoretical struggle, blindly allying themselves with one side or the other. Listening to the text allowed a creative and complete view of the controversy itself as a singular product and shed light on the possibilities of understanding Subjectivity and the other subject at the intersection between Psychoanalysis and Anthropology.
