A presença e a importância de disciplinas voltadas ao ensino e à aprendizagem de línguas estrangeiras nos espaços escolares foi perpassada por diversas maneiras de se entender sua função para os aprendizes e sua organização no sistema educacional brasileiro. Nos últimos anos, mudanças políticas e sociais na educação básica influenciaram na organização do ensino médio e diretamente na disciplina de inglês. Ao considerar este contexto, o objetivo geral desta pesquisa foi compreender o que tem sido discutido sobre a disciplina de inglês oferecida no ensino médio das escolas públicas brasileiras. E como objetivos específicos, foi entender as propostas educacionais para a aprendizagem da língua pelos alunos, a percepção destes sobre a disciplina e as dificuldades enfrentadas pelos professores para seu desenvolvimento, considerando-se o contexto educacional em que se inserem. Este estudo se constituiu em bibliográfico e adotou como método a Revisão Sistemática da Literatura de artigos científicos publicados entre janeiro de 2010 e dezembro de 2019. Para acesso aos trabalhos, as etapas delineadas para o desenvolvimento deste estudo consistiram em: definição dos âmbitos de pesquisa; sistematização da busca; verificação da literatura reunida; refinamento dos estudos; e leitura completa dos dados. Após o processo de pesquisa e busca, foram reunidos 57 (cinquenta e sete) artigos científicos. Ao se olhar para as discussões presentes na maioria dos textos, observou-se que os resultados alcançados não indicam unicamente o fracasso escolar, apesar de se reconhecer problemas relacionados à estrutura e ao funcionamento do sistema público de ensino no Brasil. De forma geral, os estudos trouxeram importantes discussões sobre as relações dos sujeitos nos processos educacionais. Críticas, no entanto, foram tecidas ao se considerar que apesar de todas as mudanças ocorridas, o ensino desta língua mantém-se preso a estruturas, distanciando-se do uso real da língua.

The presence and importance of teaching and learning foreign languages in school spaces were permeated by several ways of understanding their function as learners and their organization in the Brazilian educational system. In recent years, political and social changes in education have influenced the organization of high school and the discipline of English. When considering this context, the general objective of this research was to understand what has been discussed about the discipline of English offered in high school in Brazilian public schools. And as specific objectives, it was to understand the educational proposals for language learning by students, their perception of the discipline, and the difficulties teachers face for their development, considering the educational context in which they are included. This study was constituted as a bibliographic and adopted as a method of the Systematic Review of Literature of scientific articles published between January/2010 and December/2019. For access to the work, the steps outlined for the development of this study consisted of the definition of the research scopes; systematization of the search; verification of the literature gathered; refinement of studies; and full reading of the data. After the research and search process, 57 (fifty-seven) scientific articles were gathered. When looking at the discussions present in most texts, it was observed that the results achieved do not indicate only school failure, despite recognizing problems related to the structure and functioning of the public education system in Brazil. In general, the studies had important discussions about the subjects' relationships in the educational processes. However, criticisms were woven into considering that despite all the changes that occurred, the teaching of this language remains attached to structures, distancing itself from the real use of the language.
