A presente pesquisa se refere a época do florescimento e institucionalização da ecologia. Seu objetivo é investigar como se deu o desenvolvimento do conceito de clímax por Frederic Edward Clements (1874-1945). Procura averiguar se houve mudanças significativas no período compreendido entre 1904 e 1936. Além disso, qual foi a recepção obtida por parte da comunidade cientifica da época. Esta dissertação contém uma introdução e quatro capítulos. O Capítulo 1 apresenta Clements ao leitor e aborda sua vida e obra, apresentando alguns precedentes de suas contribuições. O Capítulo 2 descreve o percurso que levou Clements a elaborar o conceito de clímax. O Capítulo 3 discute como a comunidade científica da época recebeu a proposta de clímax de Clements. O Capítulo 4 procura responder às questões inicialmente colocadas e apresenta algumas considerações sobre o assunto tratado. Esta pesquisa levou a conclusão que o termo clímax ou sua conotação não aparecem de imediato nas obras de Clements analisadas e têm relação com outras concepções suas como associação, por exemplo. Para a construção deste conceito, Clements se baseou em seus estudos de campo e laboratório bem como nas contribuições de outros autores. Não foram detectadas mudanças significativas em relação ao conceito. As críticas recebidas diziam respeito principalmente à restrição do clímax ao clima bem como a ideia de um organismo complexo. Clements não utilizou a expressão "organismo complexo" no sentido metafórico.

The following study refers to the flourishing and institutionalization of ecology. It aims to investigate the development of the climax concept by Frederic Edward Clements (1874-1945). It seeks to ascertain whether there were significative changes from 1904 to 1936 or not. Furthermore, how the scientific community received the idea at the moment. This dissertation contains an introduction and four chapters. Chapter 1 presents Clements to the reader and addresses his life and work, featuring some precedents for his contributions. Chapter 2 describes the path that led Clements to elaborate the concept of climax. Chapter 3 discusses how the scientific community of that time received Clements' climax proposal. Chapter 4 aims to answer the questions initially posed and presents some considerations on the subject addressed. This research led to the conclusion that the term climax and its connotation do not appear immediately in Clements' analysed works. Besides that, the concept of climax is related to other Clements' conceptions such as association. To build this concept, Clements based on his field and laboratory research as well as the work developed by other scholars. No significant changes were detected in relation to the concept. The criticisms received mainly concerned the restriction of the climax to the climate as well as the idea of a complex organism. Clements did not use the term "complex organism" in a metaphorical sense.
