A memória de trabalho visual tem sido investigada nas últimas décadas permitindo a compreensão de como as informações visuais são codificadas, armazenadas e recuperadas. As evidencias de vários estudos sugerem que a atenção desempenha papel importante nestes processos, mas a sua contribuição ainda precisa ser melhor investigada. A dica retroativa tem demonstrado ser um recurso eficaz para investigar essa interface entre a atenção e memória de trabalho em tarefas de memória visual. O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar o processo de recuperação da informação na memória de trabalho visual e a contribuição da atenção neste processo, utilizando a metodologia de tarefas duplas (tarefa de memória visual e tarefa secundária) combinado ao procedimento de dicas retroativas. Participaram deste estudo 68 estudantes com idade entre 18 e 40 anos de ambos os sexos, divididos em 3 grupos experimentais que realizaram diferentes tarefas secundárias no intervalo entre a apresentação da dica retroativa e a apresentação do estímulo teste. No Experimento 1 investigamos a natureza da representação recuperada da memória de trabalho visual utilizando o Ruído Visual Dinâmico (RVD). No Experimento 2 investigamos o envolvimento da atenção no processo de recuperação através de uma tarefa de busca visual. Experimento 3 avançamos na investigação do envolvimento da atenção utilizando uma tarefa atentiva não visual de contagem de tons como tarefa interveniente. Os resultados confirmam que o efeito benéfico da dica retroativa no desempenho em tarefas de memória visual foi consistente ao longo dos três experimentos quando comparado com as provas em que dica foi neutra. Indicando que a atenção pode selecionar as informações mais relevantes para os objetivos da tarefa ser realizada (Awh & Jonides, 2001), desempenhando um papel importante na recuperação da informação armazenada e aumentando a eficácia com que a informação indicada seja recordada ou reconhecida (Chun, 2011; Gazzaley & Nobre, 2012). Porém, este efeito se mostrou sensível à apresentação de interferências e conteúdos irrelevantes à tarefa, prejudicando o processo de recuperação da informação. Para tanto, isto indica que a natureza da representação visual pode ser influenciada pela apresentação de interferências.

Visual working memory has been investigated in the last decades allowing an understanding of how visual information is encoded, stored and retrieved. Evidence from several studies suggest that attention plays an important role in these processes, but its contribution still needs to be better investigated. The retroactive cue has been shown to be an effective resource for investigating this interface between attention and working memory in visual memory tasks. The objective of the present study was to investigate the process of information retrieval in the visual working memory and the contribution of attention in this process, using the dual task methodology (visual memory task followed by a secondary task) combined with the procedure of retroactive cues. A total of 68 students aged 18-40 years of both sexes participated in this study, divided into three experimental groups that performed different secondary tasks in the interval between the presentation of the retroactive cue and the presentation of the test stimulus. In Experiment 1 we investigated the nature of the retrieved representation of visual working memory using Dynamic Visual Noise (DVN). In Experiment 2 we investigated the involvement of attention in the retrieval process through a visual search task. Experiment 3 advances the investigation of the involvement of attention using a non-visual attentive task of tone counting as an intervening task. Results confirm the beneficial effect of retroactive cue on performance in visual memory tasks, which was consistent across all three experiments when comparing informative versus neutral cue . It is important to note that attention can select the information most relevant to the objectives of the task (Awh & Jonides, 2001), playing an important role in the retrieval of stored information and increasing the efficiency which the indicated information is remembered or recognized (Chun, 2011; Gazzaley & Nobre, 2012). However, this effect was shown to be sensitive to the presentation of interferences and irrelevant contents to the task, damaging the information retrieval process. This indicate that the nature of visual representation can be influenced by the presentation of interference.
