Abstract in English
Choice behavior consists of a selection of one among two or more available alternatives, which is influenced by multiple environmental and/or biological variables. The aim of this thesis was to verify whether choice behavior can be influenced by biological variables such as sex and phases of the reproductive cycle (pregnancy and lactation), and by food/nutritional deprivation. Two studies were proposed. Study 1 aimed to investigate whether the indifference point (IP) in a choice task between probabilistic alternatives varies with the passage of time and reproductive cycles of female Wistar rats in comparison to males of the same species. Six experimental females, six control females and five control males were exposed to a choice procedure whose alternatives (two) varied in relation to the number of food pellets and their probability of delivery, determined by the IP. The probabilistic alternative provided three food pellets and the probability of obtaining food was adjusted over the trials; the other alternative provided two pellets with a 100% probability of obtaining reinforcement. After establishing the IP, the experimental females went through gestation and lactation. We found no significant differences in IP between groups and between reproductive phases. In ideal feeding conditions, males and females maintained the same IP (about 50%) between the alternatives throughout time. Gestation and lactation do not seem to influence risk taking propensity or aversion to the animals' choice under ideal nutritional conditions. The aim of Study 2 was to investigate whether the IP in a probabilistic choice task varies over the stages of the reproductive cycle of female Wistar rats submitted to a procedure of food deprivation in comparison to control females. Eight experimental females (maintained at 75% of the weight ad libitum) and six control females were submitted to a choice procedure with two alternatives that varied in relation to the number of food pellets and their probability of delivery, determined by the IP. The animals underwent the same experimental procedure performed in Study 1. Some of the females in the experimental group did not get pregnant. No significant differences were found between the groups in the indifference point through phases of the reproductive cycle and food deprivation condition. Both control and experimental females maintained the same indifference point (about 50%) between alternatives over time. Pregnancy and lactation did not seem to influence risk propensity or aversion to the animals' choice, even when feeding conditions were not ideal.
