Keywords in Portuguese
Cuidador informal
Demência
Intervenção baseada na internet

Evaluation of the effectiveness of two types of intervention for informal caregivers of elderly people with dementia

Internet-based intervention
Abstract in English
Online interventions are effective strategies to help manage the difficulties experienced by caregivers of elderly people with dementia. In this study, the effects of two online group interventions by videoconference were compared - Psychoeducation Group and Psychoeducation Group plus an intervention based on the teaching of functional analysis of behavior problems - on the perception of burden, depression, hope, and anxiety of family caregivers of elderly people with dementia. The effects of interventions on the caregiver's perception regarding the frequency of behavioral problems emitted by the elderly and the emotional impacts suffered by him (caregiver) in relation to these behaviors were also evaluated. It is a quasi-experimental research with a pre- and post-test design. A total of 28 women participated in the two studies, distributed to one of the groups - experimental (EG - Psychoeducation) or comparison (CG - Psychoeducation and teaching of performing functional analysis). In Study 1, it was observed that the EG had, in the pre-test, worse scores in all analyzed variables, compared to the CG. In the pre-and post-test analysis, no statistically significant differences were found in any of the groups. However, both groups showed improvements in the post-test in relation to the level of hopelessness. In Study 2, there was a significant reduction in the levels of depression and emotional impact in relation to the challenging behaviors of the elderly in the post-test of both groups, but the EG had higher rates of reduction for these variables. There was also a trend towards a significant reduction in anxiety in the EG participants. The online format proved to be a viable alternative for treatment for caregivers of people with dementia, but interventions on problem behaviors require even more research, as caregivers apparently demand more individualized attention so that they can manage it more efficiently.
