Caregivers of people with dementia have difficulties in dealing with challenging behaviors of the elderly, especially during naturally stressful situations, like the Covid-19 pandemic. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of two brief interventions (one group and one individual), online, aimed at caregivers of older adults (OA) with Major Neurocognitive Disorder (MND), focusing on the functional analysis (FA) and handling challenging behaviors. To evaluate the effectiveness of the group intervention, measures of burden, depression, anxiety, quality of life and hope of these caregivers were used as direct dependent variables. In the individual intervention, the dependent variable was the frequency of emission of challenging behaviors by OA with MND. Seventeen caregivers of family members diagnosed with MND participated in the group stage. Measures of depression, anxiety, quality of life, burden and stress, and hope were collected before (pre-test) and after the intervention (posttest). The intervention had five sessions in an online format for teaching FA. At the end of the group stage, the caregivers learned to perform a functional analysis of target behaviors, there was a decrease in symptoms of depression, anxiety and less emotional impact of challenging behaviors on caregivers. Three caregivers of family members with dementia participated in the individual stage. The intervention took place in online format, by video calls and text messages. A multiple baseline design between behaviors was used. The intervention consisted of five steps: selecting target behaviors, performing functional analyses, teaching the recording and sending of the daily frequency of target behaviors by text message, planning the intervention and guiding/following caregivers during the implementation. Self-injury behaviors, refusal to shower, asking who the close family members are, asking repetitive questions, requests to go home, refusal to respond to requests and physical aggression were selected for intervention. All interventions performed consisted of background changes: changing the way of making requests, proposing reinforcing activities, and setting up and handling a memory notebook. Interventions were implemented satisfactorily, with a reduction in all target behaviors, except the behavior of asking family members for the name. The feasibility and importance of online interventions, both individual and group, for the management of challenging behaviors, and their accessibility for this population are discussed, taking into account the reality of the caregivers' conditions. It is noteworthy that online interventions can help caregivers to manage challenging behaviors, improving the quality of life of caregivers and the OA with MND.
