Abstract in English
Intertemporal choices involve decisions that vary between value and time. This has been a fruitful topic in research over the past decades, but there are few field studies on the subject and no studies investigating public and private university hospitals. This study compared financial managers in public and private administration and compared whether there was a difference in the groups' temporal discount rate, the k rate. Additionally, the literature has repeatedly asserted that public ownership differs from private ownership, so this study also examined whether there was a difference in the employees' sense of ownership in the workplace, and whether ownership would affect the k rate. The procedure was conducted via Google Forms and had 38 participants, with public hospital participants accounting for 50% of the workforce. The study found no differences in the k rate of the two groups, indicating that public and private decision-makers make relatively similar decisions when it comes to investments over time (Mann-Whitney Test p=0.24 and p=0.27). The groups showed no difference in the perception of ownership, with both understanding their own workplace, whether public or private, as equally belonging (Mann-Whitney Test p=0.66), but it was observed that ownership in the Private Group influenced their k rate (p=0.05 * r=- 0.63, Spearman correlation). Structural factors such as the pandemic or salary level had a greater impact on the k rate, indicating that the dissociation of personal issues ends up influencing professional decisions regardless of the workplace.
