Hipersensibilidade dental
Hipomineralização Molar Incisivo

The influence of MIH severity on hypersensitivity, anxiety, and self-perceived aesthetics: a cross-sectional study in schoolchildren

Molar-incisor hypomineralization

Abstract in English
Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH), in addition to its clinical characteristics, brings other conditions that can directly impact the lives of its carriers, such as hypersensitivity, anxiety, and impaired aesthetics. There are no studies evaluating these aspects in the same sample, comparing patients with MIH and comparing the severity levels, and comparing them with a control group. The main objective of this cross-sectional observational study was to assess whether the presence of hypersensitivity, anxiety, and self-perceived aesthetics is more common in patients with MIH and if there are correlations between these variables. A total of 324 students, aged between 6 and 12 years, from a public elementary school in the western zone of Ribeirão Preto, SP, were recruited. For the clinical evaluation of MIH, we used the protocol by Ghanim et al., 2015. Hypersensitivity was assessed using two associated scales, measured by the VAS for reported pain and the SCASS for observed reactivity. Anxiety and self-perceived aesthetics were evaluated through questionnaires such as the Children's Fear Survey Schedule-Dental Subscale (CFSS-DS) and the Child Perceptions Questionnaire About Tooth Appearance (CQATA), respectively. Comparisons and other statistical tests were performed using the Jamovi software, specifically the Kruskal-Wallis test. The main results reveal a higher presence of hypersensitivity and aesthetic impairment in patients with severe MIH. Children with severe MIH also showed correlations between impaired self-perceived aesthetics and pain, as well as fear and anxiety.
