Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, on-site dental care services were temporarily suspended in many health units, being restricted to urgent and emergency cases, which impaired health monitoring and guidance on oral hygiene. Due to these restrictions, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Teleorientation in the transmission of oral hygiene instructions to children during the COVID-19 pandemic. For this purpose, a randomized clinical study was carried out with children aged 6 to 10 years old, having as a factor to be analyzed the comparison between two synchronous teleorientation methods with the faceto-face counseling method. The eligible triads were randomly allocated (1: 1:1) and conducted with 30 dyads of parents and children recruited at the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic of the Ribeirão Preto Dental School, University of São Paulo. Participants were divided into three groups, according to the method used to provide guidance on oral hygiene: 1) Teleorientation through the virtual health communication platform (Video For Health-V4H); 2) Teleorientation through the conventional application (WhatsApp) and 3) In-person orientation. Two questionnaires were sent remotely, one before and one after the intervention, in order to assess the parents' self-report on the children's hygiene habits, as well as the parents' understanding of oral health, measuring the change in the children's oral hygiene pattern and the improvement of understanding of the need for brushing by caregivers. The instruments for the assessment of children's oral hygiene were videos performed by the guardians during toothbrushing in two moments, before and after the intervention. The assessment of the Visible Plaque Index was carried out through photos taken by the parents at the beginning of the study and after oral hygiene guidelines. Descriptive and exploratory analyzes of all data from guardians and children were performed using the nonparametric Mann Whitney test, Spearman correlation analysis, Wilcoxon paired nonparametric test and Kruskal Wallis nonparametric test. Associations between categorical variables and groups were analyzed using Fisher's exact test. All analyzes were performed using the R program and with a significance level of 5%. According to the statistical results, it was found that there was no difference between the three groups evaluated, and that all provided a significant decrease in the plaque index and an increase in the children's brushing time (p<0.05). After the guidelines, all guardians reported training to help the child to have good oral health. It was possible to conclude that Teleorientation in oral hygiene is an effective method for providing oral hygiene instructions to children, improving knowledge and health habits in a similar way to the face-to-face counseling method.
