Abstract in English
The unexpected appearance of the COVID-19 disease generated repercussions in all social classes and health problems transcend the contagion by the virus. It raises the hypothesis that the occurrence of Bruxism may have increased, since among the associated factors are the psychosocial aspects. Bruxism is understood as a behavior characterized by dental clenching and/or grinding, which can occur both in the waking and sleeping state, and lead to significant problems, such as Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD). Considering the repercussions on mental health resulting from social distancing, the need for new forms of care in Dentistry becomes evident. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the influence of self-care on the manifestations of Bruxism and TMD during the COVID-19 pandemic, in 37 children who were being treated at the FORP/USP's Childhood Assistance Service for Bruxism and TMD, before the pandemic, through four remote therapies: Floral Therapy, Aromatherapy, Acupressure and Mindfulness. Prior to the interventions, parents and/or guardians answered a Q1 questionnaire about the child in Google Forms format. The proposed practices were explained in a virtual meeting and detailed in a tutorial. All activities were carried out for three weeks and recorded in a "Control Diary", which was photographed and sent by those responsible. After the interventions, a new Q2 questionnaire was completed for comparative analysis. As a result, a statistically significant difference was noted by Fisher's exact test in cases of clenching while awake (p=0.0057), with a significant quantitative reduction while sleeping and in cases of creaking in both wake and sleep periods. It is concluded that the interventions in this study influenced the manifestations of Bruxism and TMD, favoring their control, and these practices should be investigated in future studies.
