Abstract in English
The COVID-19 is a highly transmissible illness caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). It was first identified in China in December, 2019 but quickly spread across continents causing a pandemic. The dental environment has all risk factors for the SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Therefore, professionals and patients must adopt strict preventive measures to minimize its spread. This study evaluated the knowledge, awareness, attitudes and perspectives of patients about COVID-19 and the prevention measures in dental offices. A validated original online questionnaire was administered to patients from the five geopolitical regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Midwest, Southeast and South) during october 6 to 23, 2020. A campaign on social networks, newspapers and radio was raised to approach the target population. The form contained 28 multiple-choice questions and addressed: sociodemographic characteristics, history of dental treatments during the pandemic, knowledge about the signs and symptoms, knowledge about COVID-19 prevention measures in the dental clinic, attitudes adopted for the prevention of transmission in dental offices, severity of the disease, risk of transmission in dental clinics, fear of attending dental appointments in the pandemic and post-pandemic dental care.Descriptive analysis of data was performed using absolute and relative frequencies of the different variables and hypotheses were analyzed using the chi-square, Fisher's exact or chi-square with Yates' correction tests (α=0,05). It were obtained 2557 valid responses. Most of the volunteers were female (80.8%), aged between 20 and 29 years (51.9%) and had not attended dental offices during the pandemic (59.5%). About 90% answered that the main symptom of COVID-19 is fever, followed by shortness of breath (80.4%), anosmia/ageusia (76.1%) and dry cough (61.1%). Knowledge and attitudes towards preventive measures in dental offices were satisfactory. More than 90% of volunteers reported feeling more secure when the dentist uses personal protective equipment. Men (p<0001) and older (p=0,01) patients have more propensity to attend dental offices even if suspected COVID-19. Men were less afraid to go to a dental clinic (p<0,0001). Older (p<0,0001) and patients with lower educational level (p=0,001) underestimated the transmission risk in the dental offices. Almost 70% expects changes in dental care after the pandemic. In may be concluded that patients were aware of the seriousness of the pandemic and of the preventive measures that must be adopted in the dental offices. Therefore, the COVID-19 protection protocols should be carefully followed by the professionals.
