Abstract in English
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the teaching of Dentistry in Brazil and the difficulties of teachers in the transition to remote teaching. The positive and negative aspects and future expectations of the participants regarding the implementation of remote teaching in dental education were evaluated. This observational study had the participation of 284 Brazilian teachers who accessed the online questionnaire through a link. The questionnaire was available for a period of 28 days and contained multiple-choice questions about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dental education. Descriptive analysis was performed by the absolute and relative frequencies of the different variables. Delta values were compared using the paired t-test, Wilcoxon or Friedman. Associations were assessed using chi-square, Fisher's exact or chi-square tests with Yates' correction. Remote teaching of theoretical content was carried out by 34.74% of professors from private institutions and 65.26% of professors from public institutions. The perception of the stress generated by the pandemic, remote work and concerns about learning was higher for teachers between 31 and 40 years old (24.71%) and also for women (24.68%). It was found that 98.10% male professors and 99.33% female professors will continue to use virtual tools after the return of face-to-face activities, participating in private (98.04%) and public (99.17%) institutions. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a strong impact on the continuity of higher education in dentistry courses in Brazil, and teachers have had several difficulties, such as difficulties in transmitting online classes and adapting virtual tools in the change from traditional teaching to remote teaching. Positive perspectives presented by the participants were greater than the negative points analyzed. Future expectations point to changes in dental education in several Brazilian faculties with the integration of technological resources and digital platforms to contribute to learning in post-pandemic times.
