The osseointegration depends, among other factors, on the implant surface, that is the first component to interact with the host. Modifications on implant surface have been investigated in order to improve the quantity and quality of the new bone. Nanostructures applied to biomaterials have been proposed to provide a higher degree of osseointegration. The objective of this research was to evaluate the biological response of an implant surface modified by the addition of nano-hydroxyapatite, by means of histomorphometric (Percentage of Bone-implant Contact (BIC,%) and Fraction Occupied by the Bone Area in Relation to the Total Area) (BAFO,%)) and microtomographic (Three-dimensional Implant Bone Contact (IS / TS,%), Relationship between Bone Volume and Total Volume (BV / TV,%), Trabecular Thickness (Tb.Th, mm), Number of Trabeculae ( Tb.N), and Total Porosity (Po.Tot,%)) analysis. For this purpose, 2 types of mini-implants (double acid etched = Control group - GC) and with the addition of nanohydroxyapatite (Test Group - GT) were installed in the maxillary sinus of healthy rabbits (16 implants per group). The animals were euthanized 30 and 60 days (8 animals per period) after implant installation. The portions of the maxillary sinus containing the bone graft and the implants were collected, removed and fixed for histomorphometric and microtomographic analysis. The results obtained were expressed as mean ± standard deviation in each period. Each animal was considered the statistical unit (n = 8). The distribution of histomorphometric and microtomographic data was verified by the Shapiro-Wilk test. The data showed normal distribution and then Student's t-test was selected for analysis of differences between groups, whereas for intra-group analysis, ANOVA with Tukey post hoc teste were selected. In all analyzes, p <0.05 was considered. At 30 days, the microtomographic analysis of the bone internal to the implant threads showed no statistically significant differences (p> 0.05) for IS / TS (CG: 9.95 ± 0.17%; GT: 10.01 ± 0.10% ), Po.Tot (GT: 75.77 ± 3.47%; GC: 76.74 ± 3.08%), BV / TV (GT: 24.23 ± 3.47%; GC: 23.26 ± 3.08%), Tb.Th (GT: 0.060 ± 0.004mm; GC: 0.061 ± 0.004mm) and Tb.N (GT: 3.80 ± 0.43; GC: 3.74 ± 0.39). The analysis of the bone external to the implant threads also showed no statistically significant differences (p> 0.05) for Po.Tot (GT: 74.83 ± 2.51%; GC: 75.62 ± 1.83%), BV / TV (GT: 24.38 ± 1.83%; GC: 23.26 ± 3.08%), Tb.Th (GT: 0.063 ± 0.004; GC: 0.062 ± 0.003) and Tb.N (GT: 3 , 91 ± 0.19; GC: 3.92 ± 0.25). After 60 days, in the microtomographic analysis of intra-thread bone, statistical differences were observed between groups for all parameters evaluated (p <0.05), IS / TS (CG: 27.84 ± 5.41; GT: 58.65 ± 23.49), Po.Tot (GC: 56.35 ± 12.05%; GT: 71.75 ± 4.54%), BV / TV (GT: 43.65 ± 12.05%; GC: 28 , 25 ± 4.54%), Tb.Th (GT: 0.067 ± 0.006mm; GC: 0.059 ± 0.003mm) and Tb.N (GT: 6.40 ± 1.34; GC: 4.77 ± 0, 64). The evaluation of the bone external to the threads also showed statistically significant differences (p <0.05) for Po.Tot (GT: 66.67 ± 8.02%; CG: 76.20 ± 3.80%), BV / TV (GT : 33.33 ± 8.02%; GC: 23.80 ± 3.80%), Tb.Th (GT: 0.061 ± 0.003 mm; GC: 0.058 ± 0.003mm) and Tb.N (GT: 5.46 ± 1.18; GC: 4.07 ± 0.54). In the histomorphometric analysis, the GT presented higher% BIC and% BAFO when compared to the CG, with statistically significant differences, both in the data evaluated as function of the implant surface, as well as evaluated in function of the type of bone (grafted or cortical). From the findings, it was concluded that the implants coated with nanohydroxyapatite promoted a significant increase in bone repair when compared to a DAA control surface, suggesting that bioactive surface modification in nanoscale can act as an enhancer for bone formation in grafted areas.
