Abstract in English
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the changes in color, flectional strength and water sorption of commercial acrylic resin test bodies for denture support using as accelerated aging method. An accelerated aging system for nonmetal materials (C-UV; COMEXIM-SP) was used to produce test body aging. This apparatus has the ability to simulate the destructive forces of nature and can predict the relative durability of materials exposed to such forces. The changes in color occuring in the test bodies were determined with a device (COMCOR M.S. 1500 PLUS-COMEXIM) equipped with a basic program which includes colorimetric calculations by the CIELAB equation, A and C illuminants and color difference graphics. A universal assay machine was used for the flectional strength tests. To induce aging, a 2 hour program of condensation at 50°C and hours of exposure do U.V-B were used. The test bodies were placed in the apparatus, and five of them were removed 50 hours later for determination of alterations in color. This operation was repeated at 122, 192 and 382 hours. The test bodies to be used for the flection tests were left inside the apparatus throughout the 382 hours of testing. After aging, the test bodies were submitted to the various tests for the determination of the changes that and occurred. The flection tests indicated that the Palaton and Meliodente resins gave similar results, while the JET resin gave lower values. In the tests for color changes, the three resins showed different behaviour: the Palaton resin presented a slight alteration in color in relation to the standard, while the Meliodente resin became lighter than the standard at the end of the tests, and the JET resin presented a considerably dark color in relation to the standard. In the water sorption tests, the behavior of the three resins was identical.
