Quando pensamos em conceitos elementares da matemática que se relacionam com fatos do dia a dia, a função exponencial tem uma importância bastante clara. Diversos fenômenos relacionados com a variação acentuada podem ser modelados utilizando uma função exponencial. Neste trabalho destacamos uma situação que, devido ao nosso progresso linear cotidiano, faz com que um evento com desenvolvimento acentuado seja mal-interpretado, com isso subestimando seus efeitos. Dessa forma, com a intenção de apresentar um trabalho para um público mais amplo, esclarecer melhor os conceitos envolvidos, contextualizamos a ideia de crescimento linear e acentuado utilizando um modelo financeiro em duas situações distintas, mostramos seus desenvolvimentos em tabelas e gráficos, como são representadas por funções e a consequência dos efeitos de cada uma delas. Para isso, pretendemos caracterizar de modo adequado as funções lineares e exponenciais, bem como suas taxas de variações. Comparamos as funções exponenciais com outros tipos de funções e demonstramos como elas são difíceis de se superar em termos de seu crescimento ou decrescimento. Veremos que, de uma situação financeira peculiar pode surgir o número e, muito comum em funções que representam fenômenos de ordem natural, presentes em diversas situações de nossas vidas. Fazemos uma análise simplificada entre a pandemia de Covid-19 e as funções exponenciais, sugerimos alguns questionamentos para reflexão do tema, além de trazer duas atividades práticas voltadas a alunos do ensino médio, tudo com a intenção do leitor entender melhor o fenômeno de variação acentuada.

When we think of elementary mathematical concepts that relate to everyday facts, the exponential function has a very clear importance. Several phenomena related to sharp variation can be modeled using an exponential function. In this work we highlight a situation that, due to our daily linear progress, causes an event with accentuated development to be misinterpreted, thereby underestimating its effects. In this way, with the intention of presenting a work to a wider audience, better clarifying the concepts involved, we contextualize the idea of linear and accentuated growth using a financial model in two different situations, we show its developments in tables and graphs, as they are represented by functions and the consequence of the effects of each one of them. For this, we intend to properly characterize the linear and exponential functions, as well as their rates of change. We compare exponential functions with other types of functions and demonstrate how difficult they are to overcome in terms of their growth or decrease. We will see that, from a peculiar financial situation, the number e can arise, very common in functions that represent phenomena of a natural order, present in different situations of our lives. We make a simplified analysis between the Covid-19 pandemic and exponential functions, we suggest some questions to reflect on the theme, in addition to bringing two practical activities aimed at high school students, all with the intention of the reader to better understand the phenomenon of accentuated variation .
