Real Time Location Systems

Abstract in English
Introduction: Technological tools have been incorporated by hospitals in the context of hospital digitalization. The implementation of Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) for tracking people and devices in the perioperative context, although it has benefits reported in the literature, is not yet widely disseminated. Methodology: A RTLS system was applied at the Surgical Center of the Central Institute of Hospital das Clínicas da FMUSP using BLE (bluetooth low energy) technology to determine the position of devices and patients. Precision tests of beacons were performed and a software was developed with data presentation in dashboards. Results: Accuracy at sector level was obtained in 100% of the tests in all sectors studied. In the operating rooms, accuracy was obtained at room level, ranging from 60 to 76.67%. The developed software indicates the location of beacons within the sector and presents dashboards with indicators relevant to the perioperative context. Discussion: The study highlighted challenges faced in the implementation of BLE technology in the perioperative environment of a large hospital. Beacons were successfully tracked at the sector level and there were limitations in tracking at the room level. The developed software presents data collected automatically by the system and exposes indicators applicable to the perioperative environment with real-time updates. Conclusions: Tracking devices and patients in the perioperative environment can be performed using BLE technology, considering limitations of accuracy in data presentation. The software developed can be applied to different IoT systems and can be used at operational, tactical and strategic level
