Abstract in English
Spoan syndrome is a neurodegenerative genetic disease characterized by spastic paraparesis, optic nerve atrophy and peripheral neuropathy, with more than 70 cases diagnosed in the northeast of Brazil. The objective of this word was to evaluate the manual function of people with Spoan syndrome before and after performing the intervention using exercises, stretching and resting ventral static orthosis, placed on the dominant hand, and the combination of the two procedures. This quasi-experimental before-and-after study with eleven participants were involved using mixed methods, combining manual dexterity tests such as the Box and Blocks test and Jebsen-Taylor; strength test with Jamar dynamometer; measure of joint range of motion and semistructured interview. The variables time to perform the manual dexterity tests, wrist and hand joint amplitude measurements and the participants' strength were compared before and after the interventions. To guide the exercises the participants made use of a guidance guide with illustrations of the movements. Exercise intervention in the first month of the study improved the ability to pick up large and light objects more than at the intervention phase associated with the orthosis. The orientation of exercises with educational strategies resulted in the improvement of movement quality, agility and performance in the daily activities of people with this type of neurodegenerative disease
