INTRODUCTION: Long Latency Auditory Evoked Potentials (LLAEP) are relevant in children with language disorders because they have exogenous components (P1, N1 and P2) related to sensory acoustic processing, and the cognitive component (N2 and P300), which reflects cortical activity involved in discrimination, integration and attention skills. Verify the processing of different acoustic stimuli in children with reading and writing disorders can contribute to early identification and effective intervention. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the sensory and cognitive components of LLAEP with Tone Burst and Speech stimuli in children with reading and writing disorders (study group SG) and compare them with the control group (CG). METHOD: 40 children participated in this study, aged between 8 and 11 years, being 20 children with reading and writing disorders (SG) and 20 children with typical development (CG) matched by age, sex and schooling. All participants had normal hearing thresholds and in the neuropsychological assessment they had an IQ index greater than 80. LLAEP were performed with stimuli Tone Burst (1000 Hz - frequent and 2000 Hz - rare) and Speech (/ba/ - frequent and /da/ - rare). RESULTS: Mean latency values for all components were higher in the SG than in the CG for TB, but no statistically significant differences were found when comparing the groups. For the Speech stimulus, statistically significant differences were found between SG and CG only for the P300 component, and the SG had higher latency values when compared to the CG. Regarding amplitude values, the SG had lower values than the CG in all components for the TB, but no statistically significant differences were found when comparing the groups; a statistically significant difference was observed for the mean values of amplitude only for the N2-P300 component with Speech stimulus, with the SG showing lower responses than the CG. CONCLUSION: The present study suggests the presence of alterations in the perception of auditory information in children with reading and writing disorders identified by LLAEP, which may indicate impaired integration of the auditory association area with the cortical and subcortical areas of the central auditory nervous system
