Abstract in English
Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, progressive, and degenerative neurological disease of the central nervous system (CNS), characterized by a demyelinating inflammatory process and formation of glial scars on the white matter. Fatigue is the most common symptom of the disease, as is reduced muscle strength, including the respiratory muscles. Objective: To verify the association between self-reported fatigue and the strength of the respiratory muscles in MS. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted by evaluating 40 patients with MS from June to September 2023. Patients were recruited in the Neurology Outpatient Clinic at the Universidade Metropolitana de Santos (UNIMES). Besides clinical and demographic data, all patients with fatigue, assessed by the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS), also underwent the evaluation of respiratory muscle strength by means of manovacuometry. Results:There was a weak negative correlation between total MFIS and Pinsp (r=-0.48), weak negative correlation between total MFIS and Pexp (r=-0.43), weak negative correlation between the physical domain of MFIS and Pinsp (r=-0.44), weak negative correlation between the cognitive domain of MFIS and Pinsp (r=-0.31) and with Pexp (r=-0.35). The psychosocial domain of the MFIS showed a moderate negative correlation with Pinsp (r=-0.53) and Pexp (r=-0.51). Conclusions: There was a weak negative correlation between the total MFIS and the Pinsp and Pexp. Regarding the physical domain of the MFIS we concluded a weak negative correlation with the Pinsp, a weak negative correlation between the cognitive domain of the MFIS and the Pexp and finally, a moderate negative correlation between the psychosocial MFIS and the Pinsp and the Pexp
