Abstract in English
Purpose: Evaluate the effects (benefits) of ophthalmic lenses with a selective blue-violet light filter, without and with additional power of 0.4 D in the near zone for digital asthenopia. Methods: A controlled, randomized and blinded clinical trial was conducted with 49 volunteers (age, 29 ± 5.5 years; male: female, 18:31). Digital asthenopia was evaluated by a questionnaire. Accommodation amplitude was measured by the near point of accommodation method. Near point of convergence was measured by approaching an optotype 0.50 m until the examined one sees in diplopia. Evaluations were carried out with the use of ophthalmic lenses without a selective blue-violet light filter (baseline), and after 4 weeks with the use of lenses with a selective blue-violet light filter, without and with an additional 0.4D power in the near zone. During the use of the tested lenses, visual comfort was evaluated in activities such as read a book, use the smartphone, watch TV, use the computer and use the tablet. Results: Based on the questionnaire, total baseline mean asthenopia score (17.61± 5.51) was reduced to 13.78 ± 7.51, in the use of lenses with selective filter of blue-violet light (p=0.003) and for 12.53 ± 10.28 in the use of lenses with selective filter of blue-violet light with additional 0.4D power in the near zone (p = 0.000). Between the lenses tested, there was no difference in the total mean asthenopia score (p=0.002) and in the evaluation of visual comfort. Mean accommodation amplitude and mean near point of convergence were not changed. Conclusions: Baseline digital asthenopia was significantly reduced in the use of ophthalmic lenses with selective blue-violet light filter, without and with additional power of 0.4 D in the near zone. The scores of digital asthenopia and visual comfort in the use of the lenses tested were similar
