Abstract in English
In this study, acupuncture therapy is used to mitigate the symptoms induced by the hormonal blockade to which breast cancer patients are routinely submitted. The selected acupuncture point protocol is based on the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine on the appearance of the myriad of symptoms that make up the climacteric syndrome. Sixty women diagnosed with breast cancer who were using tamoxifen were divided into three groups, one group was submitted to acupuncture treatment for 10 weekly sessions, another one was submitted to sham intervention also for 10 weekly sessions and the third group was monitored without specific intervention for 10 weeks (waiting list). The intensity of symptoms was measured using scales aimed at assessing depression, sleep quality and symptoms related to menopause. The results show greater control of symptoms in the group that underwent acupuncture compared to the other groups, and this difference is not only statistically significant but also with a large effect size, indicating the possibility of using this therapy to optimize quality of life during breast cancer treatment
