Abstract in English
INTRODUCTION: Considering tinnitus high prevalence at population, as well as it´s subjectivity, questionnaires to evaluate and to guide clinical decision on best therapeutic approach and follow up are mandatory. However, before using a questionnaire, the translation, cultural adaptation and validation in the language that it will be used, need to be done. OBJECTIVE: Translate to Brazilian Portuguese language the TPFQ (Tinnitus Primary Function Questionnaire) and THQ (Iowa Tinnitus Handicap Questionnaire) questionnaires, as well as validate the TPFQ. METHODS: This study was performed in two steps, step 1 with a prospective design and step 2 with a retrospective design, in patients with chronic tinnitus. The step 1 consisted in translation, cultural adaptation, and reliability analyses of TPFQ and THQ, with a 20 patient sample size. The step 2 included 1095 patients to validation of TPFQ (translated at step 1); the validation criteria adopted THI handicap for match. RESULTS: Mean age of patients at step 1 was 55 years (SD± 22 years); there were no misunderstanding within translated version. The TPFQ presented good inner reliability in the test retest application (=0.95), as well as a good reproducibility (ICC 0.82) for the total score and at the four aspects evaluated. The THQ had a good inner reliability in the test retest application (=0.95 test - =0.94 retest), as well as a good reproducibility for the total score and at factor 1 and 2 (ICC 0.75); the factor 3 presented low reproducibility (ICC=0.48). The step 2 had an expressive sample of patients from 14 states of Brazil, 46% were female. A high correlation and a high significance level were observed between TPFQ and THI total score (r=0.84, P<.001; 95% CI: 0.820.85). This finding allowed us to build a linear regression to predict THI total score, based on TPFQ total score. CONCLUSION: The TPFQ and THQ handicaps were translated and cultural adapted to Brazilian Portuguese language. The TPFQ was validated and, due to its high correlation with the THI, is possible to predict THI total score based on TPFQ results
