Abstract in English
Objective: to evaluate the sensitivity of Vertiguard® system in detecting body sway in the elderly compared with Equitest System Neurocon ® Computerized Dynamic Posturography (CDP). Method: the study was authorized by the local ethics committee. The study group consisted of 69 elderly people aged 60 or over with imbalance. A total of 39 asymptomatic volunteers formed the control group. Body sway was analyzed using tests that are equivalent between equipment. Comparison of results was performed using The Chi-square test with Yates' correction. Results: The subjects were distributed according to the final result of CDP and Vertiguard in normal and altered exam. There was no effect of sex on responses in both tests. In patients, CDP was more sensitive than Vertiguard (p=0.0002). The study group had significantly worse CDP measures when compared to the control group (p=0.0024). There was no significant difference in Vertiguard results between the two groups (p=0.214). There was no difference in the response of the study and control groups (p=0.9064) between altered CDP and Vertiguard. Patients showed more sway than controls in condition 4 (standing with eyes closed on unstable surface) on Vertiguard (p=0.00608). In the other conditions, there was no difference between the two groups in both tests. Conclusions: Verriguard was able to identify body balance disorders in patients with vestibular disorders and was able to identify body sway in elderly people in condition 4
