Abstract in English
Introduction: An endometrial polyp is a localized hyperplastic growth consisting of a stroma with a thin and heavily vascularized wall and an epithelial surface covering. It occurs in 7.8% to 34.9% of women, and the rate increases as women age. Genital tract bleeding is the most common clinical symptom, and it is related to polyp number, location, and size. Genital bleeding, especially after menopause, negatively impacts a womans quality of life. Objectives: To evaluate (1) the quality of life of women with endometrial polyps who underwent polypectomy, (2) the gynecological, clinical, and demographic factors as well as the comorbidities associated with the occurrence of endometrial polyps, and (3) the pathoanatomic results. Materials and Methods: Sixty-two women assisted at the Hysteroscopy Sector, Gynecological Clinic Division, Clinics Hospital, School of Medicine, University of São Paulo and recruited for the study signed a free and informed consent statement and completed the SF-36v2® Health Survey questionnaire. After hysteroscopy, the women were divided into two groups: Polyp Group (PG) 32 women diagnosed with endometrial polyps and who underwent polyp removal and Control Group (CG) 30 women without endometrial polyps. Results: The mean age of the PG was 52 years, a significantly older age than that of the CG (45 years). In the PG, after polypectomy, the limitation due to physical aspects domain increased from 38.0 (T0) to 100.0 (T1). No such change occurred in the CG. The first relative treatment effect (RTE) measurement was 0.405 (95% CI 0.330-0.490) for the PG and 0.459 (95% CI 0.383-0.538) for the CG. The second RTE measurement was 0.631 (95% CI 0.559-0.693) for the PG and 0.500 (95% CI 0.426-0.574) for the CG. Conclusions: The quality of life of the women with endometrial polyps improved significantly after polyp removal. These patients had a predominance of endometrial thickening and abnormal uterine bleeding. There was only one case of cancer per group
