Abstract in English
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is an idiopathic and progressive neurodegenerative disease of the motor system. It presents in different clinical forms, with multisystem characteristics, notably in the loss of motor functions, speech, swallowing, respiratory function and functional independence, with an impact on the quality of life of patients and their caregivers. Pain is a frequent symptom and difficult to treat. The performance of physical therapy has been increasing in the treatment of pain in ALS, especially in motor activity programs without, however, specific protocols. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the presence of pain in the evolution of ALS, with the use of the MCGILL QUESTIONARY PAIN (MQP) scale in patients registered at the ALS Unit of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Medical School of the University of São Paulo. The presence of pain was detected in the six subjects who participated in the research, in at least one of the visits over six months of follow-up. However, due to the low adherence of patients surveyed by factors related to the high morbidity of the disease itself, associated with the social crisis imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the sample number did not allow the obtaining of greater details of the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of pain, nor its relationship with the evolution of the disease. Given the characteristics of ALS, multicenter studies with expanded sections are necessary to deepen the understanding of pain in ALS
