The prevalence of childhood obesity has been growing worldwide and is currently classified by the WHO as a global epidemic. In Brazil, rates of overweight and obesity have not stopped growing in recent decades and have recently increased in children, including those under 5 years of age. With the ineffectiveness of measures to control excess weight, the focus began on preventive measures. Given this scenario, children have become the privileged focus of control and prevention measures by government and health entities. Several studies have identified gaps in the literature regarding the point of view of subjects who live with excess weight and who are the object of these policies, especially children. This work sought to understand the experience of children identified as being overweight, its impact on their daily lives, and the meanings attributed to this situation by their families. The research carried out was qualitative, and 21 subjects were interviewed, 11 of which were children, aged between 7 and 10 years, and 10 of their guardians. The interviews were carried out in public parks in the city of São Paulo in January 2021. The data obtained were treated with thematic categorical content analysis and interpreted in the light of the interpretative anthropology framework. The results show that families point out as the main explanations for overweight: the family environment, the child's individuality and the occurrence of disruptive situations in family dynamics. Health is understood as the balance of different aspects of a child's life, with weight being just one of these components. Overweight and obesity are not seen as a continuum and are understood by families as elements of different dimensions. Overweight is seen as a situation linked to lifestyle and behavior and obesity as a health condition. The results also indicated that the daily life of the interviewed children was marked by issues such as the pressure of the thin body pattern, the official nutritional discourse, dietary restrictions and bullying. The domestic environment was characterized by the overload of female work, where family routines were profoundly altered by the Covid-19 pandemic, especially with regard to dietary practices, physical activity and the time spent on screens by children. This study contributes to the advancement of research on children's overweight experience and health research carried out with children, thus filling a gap in the literature
