Stigma
Abstract in English
Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease that mainly causes skin lesions and damage to peripheral nerves that can lead to irreversible physical disabilities. Patients with this condition carry stigmas and prejudices due to the history and beliefs attributed to the disease, which can cause suffering, affecting the individual's self-esteem and relationships, impairing their socialization. The objective of this study was to analyze the presence or absence of stigma related to leprosy from the reports of patients who are in outpatient follow-up and participated in a welcoming group for the disease. And, also, to observe if the participation in the group helped in some way in the treatment of these patients. Through exploratory qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis, the records collected by telephone interviews conducted by two guiding questions were analyzed: "how does the disease affect your life and how did the host group help you?". A total of 53 patients over 18 years of age, of both sexes, participated in this study in a period of 06 months, being 25 women (47.2%) and 28 men (52.8%), with a mean age of 55.5 years. and the standard deviation 15. As a result, it was found that in 36% of the meetings in groups, the theme of prejudice was addressed, brought by the participants as something that affects the routine of those who perform the treatment of this disease. There were reports of decreased self-esteem after sequelae of the disease and withdrawal from acquaintances and family members who were afraid of contagion. The lack of information about the disease proves to be a factor that contributed to the maintenance of the stigma that leprosy carries. The vast majority of participants (96.2%) reported that the group helped them during the treatment of leprosy, as a way of clearing up doubts about the disease, learning more about the treatment, medications, sequelae, symptoms and forms of contagion. . As conclusions, the research shows that the stigma of leprosy is still present in the daily lives of those who face this disease and that this can harm the quality of life of these people. Reception groups in the waiting room format in health units can help to improve information and knowledge about leprosy, improving the way to face prejudice and treatment
