Abstract in English
In 1923, teacher Alice Meirelles Reis started to build her photographic collection about the children and her work with them in the kindergarten extended to Escola Normal Caetano de Campos, in Praça da República, São Paulo. As an amateur photographer, her profession was teaching and not photography, she proposed to document her work and the children through pictures in this schools environment. Since the photographs are documentary sources, the pictures created by this teacher provide us the possibility to reflect on the childrens representation in the beginning of 20th century. It is worth highlighting that during that time Medicine, Hygiene and Pedagogy stablish legitimacy as sciences that theorize about childhood. Additionally, these scientific fields are also mobilized as parts of political and ideological disputes of that period. Regarding the recently proclaimed Brazilian republic, it concerns the new citizens formation, more evolved and civilized. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to understand these childhoods representations during this period and this specific location through the eyes of the author, teacher Alice Meirelles Reis, who constituted herself as a teaching professional and a woman from São Paulo, and who used to reflect and to value her profession, focusing her attention and studies on early years education.
