A educação de garotos pobres e/ou abandonados, em boa proporção os negros, se deu no Brasil via internação em Instituições totais. Neste processo, as ações formativas contribuíram para a construção de suas masculinidades, bem como se conectou à própria configuração do que significa ser um homem negro na sociedade brasileira. Este trabalho buscou compreender como o Instituto Ana Rosa, instituição fundada pelo Barão de Souza Queiroz que funciona há 148 anos na cidade de São Paulo, atuou e segue atuando nesse processo, no intuito de compreender algumas das razões para sua permanência. São ingredientes da identidade do instituto: a filantropia, a benemerência e a relação com o Estado. Na pesquisa, que combinou análise de documentos e realização de observações e entrevistas, foram consideradas as perspectivas de descendentes do Barão, que compuseram ou compõem a Direção do Instituto, funcionários e internos. Na análise, mobilizamos o conceito de rugosidade de Milton Santos, as pesquisas recentes sobre masculinidades negras e os debates sobre classe, raça e gênero. Após a investigação, conclui-se que reiteradamente convivem naquele ambiente os elementos constitutivos da gênese do Instituto, que participam da manutenção de aspectos fundantes da formação social brasileira, sobretudo a rígida hierarquia das relações.

The education of poor and/or abandoned boys, a large proportion of whom were Black, took place in Brazil via internment in total institutions. In this process, the educational actions contributed to build their masculinities, at the same time as it was connected to the very configuration of what it means to be a Black man in Brazilian society. This thesis sought to understand how the Ana Rosa Institute, founded by the Baron of Souza Queiroz, has been operating for 148 years in the city of São Paulo; the aim of this research is to analyse some of the reasons for its endurance. The ingredients of the institute's identity are philanthropy, benevolence and the relationship with the State. During the research, which combined document analysis with observations and interviews; also, the perspectives of the Baron's descendants, who composed or compose the Institute's Board of Directors, employees and interns were considered. For the analysis, we worked with Milton Santos' concept of roughness, recent research on Black masculinities and debates on class, race and gender. After the investigation, we conclude that the elements that constitute the genesis of the Institute repeatedly coexist in that environment, which participate in the maintenance of founding aspects of Brazilian social formation, especially the rigid hierarchy of relations.
