Abstract in English
This dissertation is the fruit of an investigation about the Museum of Anthropology of Vale do Paraíba (MAV) as an educative institution and the uses of this facility by visitors resulting from the appropriation of this place of memory. I have observed the relations among the residents of Jacareí, SP, Brazil, a museum located in this city and a public school which, over decades, occupied the building where today the museum is installed. The house that became a school and later became a museum is part of the city s social imagery; it tells part of history of schooling in Jacareí and makes up the collective identity of the city. Having as a theoretical framework the analyses by Michel de Certeau about the arts of doing, I have researched the uses given by a portion of the museum s visitors, as well as the multiple interpretations as assigned to the collections by both the managers and the visitors. I have looked at the individuals who, by producing discourses and using the space at their own manner, build cultural heritage and social identities in a process that, as I see it, is educational. I have also taken into consideration the importance of conserving the Museum based on the idea of the right to the past as citizenship right inasmuch as MAV, its collection and everyday practices represent more than a material legacy of the past to the present. The dimension of right to the past involves fundamentally the possibility of producing social memories, a dynamic identity aspect whose importance lies more on the individuals than on the museum objects themselves.
