O estudo explora o arquivo da Unevangelized Fields Mission (UFM), o qual abrange 247 números do periódico Light and Life, principal veículo de divulgação da Agência missionária protestante criada em 1931 na Inglaterra, com o intuito de mapear as principais racionalidades que tomam corpo nas práticas discursivas da Missão e, especialmente, em seus modos de ler a Bíblia. Dentre os 9 países e as 2 colônias nos quais a Agência atuou no período de 1931 a 1965, recorte temporal da tese, foram explorados práticas e discursos de agentes no Congo Belga, no Brasil e na Papua-Nova Guiné. Apresenta-se as raízes histórico-filosóficas dessas práticas com vistas a demarcar sua emergência, operando, para isso, com um arquivo mais denso, mais difuso, mais plural e inscrito numa temporalidade maior, visto se tratar de uma busca arqueológica que perpassou os cinco séculos dos protestantismos. Para tanto, elegeu-se o quadro The Broad and Narrow Way (1883), atualização inglesa da imagem alemã Der breite und der schmale Weg (1862) de Charlotte Reihlen e Conrad Scharcher, como marco orientador da imersão analítica em três movimentos que historicamente atravessaram os protestantismos e suas práticas de leitura da Bíblia: o puritanismo, o evangelicalismo e o pietismo. Do arquivo constituído, destacam-se impressos, leis, obras devocionais, obras dogmáticas, uma cartilha, imagens, além do apoio na historiografia já constituída. Com a noção de arquivo proposta por Michel Foucault, apresenta-se traços das relações entre os protestantismos, a educação e o Estado. Observou-se, então, que não é possível localizar na emergência da Reforma Protestante a atual compreensão literal da Bíblia como Palavra de Deus, assim como foi identificada a conformação da ideia dos textos originais da Bíblia livres de erros e contradições no fim do século XVI. Ainda, no que diz respeito às relações entre os protestantismos, a educação e o Estado, a investigação empenhou-se em demonstrar os elos entre o movimento evangelical missionário e o espraiamento da escola moderna, bem como projetos de governamento social pelas Escrituras que caracterizam a lógica protestante. De modo não antevisto, atestou-se que as práticas protestantes de leitura da Bíblia emergiram como fulcrais às viradas epistemológicas no Ocidente desde o século XVI. Conclui-se, assim, que a tentativa de governamento social pelas Escrituras se situa no interior de um intenso processo histórico de lutas, estas também inscritas em rupturas e transformações que instauram novos modos de conhecer.

The study explores the archive of Unevangelized Fields Mission (UFM), which covers 247 issues of the Journal Light and Life, main means of dissemination of the protestant missionary agency created in 1931 in England, aiming at mapping the main rationalities that form the discursive practices in the Mission and, specially, in their ways of reading the Bible. Among the 9 countries and the 2 colonies in which the agency acted in the period from 1931 until 1965, time frame of the study, practices and discourses of the agents were explored in Belgium Congo, Brazil and Papa New Guinea. Historical-philosophical roots of these practices are presented aiming at demarcating their emergency, functioning, therefore, as a thicker, fuzzier, more plural archive and registered within a larger temporality, as it is about an archaeological search that crossed five centuries of Protestantism. To this end, the painting The Broad and Narrow Way (1883) was selected, English update of the German image Der breite und der schmale Weg (1862) of Charlotte Reihlen and Conrad Scharcher, as a guiding landmark of the analytical immersion of three movements that have historically crossed the Protestantism and its practices of reading the Bible: Puritanism, Evangelicalism and Pietism. The archive consists of printings, laws, devotional works, dogmatic works, one booklet, images, besides the support on the historiography formed. Under the notion of archive proposed by Michael Foucault, features of the relations between Protestantism, Education and State are presented. It was observed, then, that it was not possible to find in the emergence of the Protestant Reform the current literal understanding of the Bible as a Word of God, as well as it was identified the conformation of the idea of original texts of the Bible free of errors and contradictions at the end of the sixteenth century. Still, with the regard of the relations between Protestantism, Education and the Estate, the study strived to show the links between the evangelical missionary movement and the spreading of the modern school, as well as the projects of social governance by the Scriptures that characterize the Protestant logic. In an unforeseen way, it was certified that the Protestant practices of reading the Bible emerged as central to the epistemological turns in the West since the 16th century. It was concluded, therefore, that the attempt of the social governance by the Scriptures is within the interior of an intense historical process of fights, they also registered in ruptures and transformations that establish new ways of knowing.
