Esta tese teve como objetivo examinar os saberes sobre a cosmética, ou seja, sobre a limpeza corporal e o embelezamento físico de uma pessoa, que circularam na língua vernácula por meio dos livros em Portugal e na América portuguesa ao longo do século XVIII, embora esse tema não esteja explicitamente registrado nas fontes históricas. Além disso, foram estudadas as informações de caráter técnico que oferecem as fontes e as receitas nelas contidas, incluindo os materiais que elas requerem para o seu preparo. Utilizou-se como perspectiva metodológica a análise dessas obras mediante alguns pressupostos. Um deles orientou-se pela materialidade e circulação dos livros, compreendendo que esses eram suportes físicos que circularam pelo Atlântico vinculando saberes sobre a cosmética. Foram apresentadas ainda as trajetórias de seus autores e o seu contexto. O outro se norteou pela textualidade e procurou-se observar quais saberes apareciam reiteradamente. Verificou-se que os saberes sobre a cosmética circulavam entre Portugal e a América portuguesa desde 1704 por meio dos livros e na língua vernácula, ao mesmo tempo que ocorria a movimentação de pessoas e de materiais. Entre 1704 e 1754, foram publicadas várias receitas de cosméticos para o rosto, os lábios, os mamilos, o nariz, os cabelos, as mãos, os dentes. Para preparar os cosméticos foi empregada uma miríade de insumos obtidos de fontes animais, minerais e vegetais, a nível global. Os saberes sobre os materiais da Ásia, da América do Sul e da Europa foram codificados nas farmacopeias e circularam por todo o mundo atlântico. Cirurgiões, boticários, jesuítas, os mediadores culturais, colocavam em circulação saberes de origens diversas, inovando técnicas e produtos voltados para o embelezamento, mas também mantendo uma tradição de algumas preparações cosméticas. Uma inflexão quanto ao embelezamento parece ocorrer entre 1785 e 1794, com uma diminuição das formulações. Os livros sobre higiene, escritos frequentemente por médicos, no vernáculo, incorporavam os ideais iluministas de progresso humano e educação popular. Não foi possível encontrar uma obra especializada sobre a cosmética, mas foi possível identificar tais saberes no trânsito atlântico, a partir de 1704 e ao longo do século XVIII, que possibilitaram aprender a embelezar e a limpar o corpo em Portugal e na América portuguesa.

This thesis aimed to examine the knowledge about cosmetics, that is, about body cleanliness and beautification of people, that circulated in the vernacular language through books in Portugal and in Portuguese America throughout the eighteenth century, despite this topic not being explicitly recorded in the historical sources. In addition, the technical information available in the sources and in the recipes therein was studied, including the materials these required for their preparation. The methodological approach for the analysis of these works was based on certain assumptions, one of which was oriented by the materiality and circulation of the books, with these being the physical hard copies that circulated across the Atlantic linking the knowledge of cosmetics. The trajectories of their authors and their context were also presented. The other was guided by the textuality and sought to observe which knowledge appeared repeatedly. This research revealed that knowledge about cosmetics circulated between Portugal and Portuguese America from 1704 through books and in the vernacular language, whilst at the same time there was a movement of people and of materials. Between 1704 and 1754, various cosmetic recipes for face, lips, nipples, nose, hair, hands, teeth were published. A myriad of raw materials obtained from animal, mineral and plant sources were used to prepare the cosmetics. The knowledge about the materials from Asia, South America and Europe was codified in pharmacopoeias and circulated across the Atlantic. Surgeons, apothecaries, Jesuits, the cultural mediators, put the knowledge from diverse origins into circulation, innovating techniques and products for beautification purposes, but also maintaining a tradition of some cosmetic preparations. A shift in beautification seemed to have occurred between 1785 and 1794, with a reduction of the formulations. The books on hygiene, frequently written by doctors in the vernacular, incorporated the ideals of the Enlightenment of human progress and popular education. No specialized work on cosmetics could be found, but it was possible to identify such knowledge across the Atlantic from 1704 and throughout the eighteenth century which enabled learning to beautify and to clean the body in Portugal and in Portuguese America.
