Abstract in English
In the Cypriot Orations of Isocrates, we have his project for the education of the prince. Evagoras had been king of Salamis, a kingdom on the Isle of Cyprus; Nicocles, his son, was already a disciple of Isocrates who, on being crowned king after his fathers death, received from him a speech on the tasks of monarchs as well as a speech in which Nicocles addressed his subjects. In this work, Isocrates expounds the duties and actions of a king, for example, the importance of being wise in thoughts, words and actions, of always being surrounded by virtuous men, of loving his people and making yourself worthy of being loved, among others. On the other hand, we also have everything to repudiate, for example, vice and mediocrity and finally, the duties of being fair and severe when necessary. Thus, when we analyze the Cypriot Orations, we realize that it is a discourse in honor of the paideia of Isocrates, through Evagoras and Nicocles, that is, the work demonstrates how their form of education would be efficient to train capable leaders from its pedagogical method, that is, the education of the prince, but, in addition to all this, we have the education issue loaded with political and ethical content, starting from the fact of choosing royal men to also show the political conceptions of the Athenian educator. The purpose of this study is, therefore, to analyze the way in which Isocrates presents his paideia of the prince in theses discourses as well at to discuss its possible importance in studies on education.
