A Escola Americana de Caetité foi fundada no ano de 1912 e fez parte do projeto missionário dos protestantes presbiterianos na cidade. Esse grupo de presbiterianos atuou no país por meio de duas frentes missionárias: a South Brazil Mission e Central Brazil Mission. Esta última com ação direta no estado do Sergipe, Bahia e norte de Minas. Por meio da Central Brazil Mission, chegaram em Salvador (1871) e alcançaram o interior do estado, primeiramente à região da Chapada Diamantina (1906), na sequência na região alto sertaneja (1909), instalando igrejas e escolas. Esta dissertação discute a trajetória dos sujeitos históricos envolvidos na implantação e atuação da Escola Americana de confissão de fé presbiteriana em Caetité nas primeiras décadas do século XX. Em seu período de atuação, conflitos políticos e religiosos estiveram imbricados nos 14 anos de duração dessa instituição de ensino. Concomitantemente às tramas e tensões, o projeto pedagógico presbiteriano é também apresentado e analisado. Esta dissertação está dividida em três partes: no primeiro capítulo discutimos a relação entre política, religião e educação para compreendermos a conjuntura do período com a chegada dos presbiterianos em Caetité. O segundo capítulo traça a trajetória da Central Brazil Mission na Bahia até a chegada dos missionários americanos no Alto Sertão baiano. O terceiro capítulo aborda a atuação da Escola Americana na cidade, os sujeitos envolvidos nessa iniciativa, os métodos de ensino e as representações de educação que foram construídas por meio das fontes analisadas.

The American School of Caetité was founded in 1912 and was part of the missionary project of Presbyterian Protestants in the city. This group of Presbyterians has worked in Brazil through two missionary fronts: the South Brazil Mission and Central Brazil Mission. The last one with direct action in the state of Sergipe, Bahia and northern Minas. Through the Central Brazil Mission, they have arrived in Salvador (1871) and reached the interior of the state, first to the Chapada Diamantina region (1906), then in the Alto Sertão region (1909), installing churches and schools. This dissertation discusses the trajectory of the historical subjects involved in the implantation and actuation of the American School of confession of Presbyterian faith in Caetité in the first decades of the 20th century. During the period of activity, political and religious conflicts were intertwined in the 14 years of duration of this educational institution. Concomitantly with the plots and tensions, the Presbyterian pedagogical project is also presented and analyzed. This dissertation is divided into three parts: in the first chapter we discussed the relationship between politics, religion and education in order to understand the context of the period with the arrival of the Presbyterians in Caetité. The second chapter traces the trajectory of the Central Brazil Mission in Bahia until the arrival of American missionaries in the "Alto Sertão". The third chapter discussed the performance of the American School in the city, the subjects involved in this initiative, the teaching methods and the representations of education that were built through the analyzed sources.
