This study investigates the relations between art and the Brazilian educational field from a Foucauldian perspective. More specifically, it analyses the emergence and the provenance of art teaching in school, inquiring how this alliance took place, its displacements and its repercussions in the present. The analytical procedure adopted is anchored in Foucaults archeogenealogical perspective: on the one hand, the aim is to archaeologically understand the discursive modes that materialized in certain pastoral toned narratives about art in education; on the other hand, it intends to circumscribe genealogically the emergence of certain practices devoted to teaching arts, which are characterized by a set of persistent discursive imperatives in circulation in the investigated field. Having the notion of archive as a theoretical-procedural motto, this investigation initially approaches the discourses on art teaching present in 55 prominent Brazilian scientific journals in the educational field, from 1996 to 2019, in order to gather some contemporary debates about the art/education dyad. Aiming at comprehending the discourse prior to the period in focus, a second movement required focusing the Revista Brasileira de Estudos Pedagógicos as a whole, since 1944, in order to describe the discourses that involve the practices that took place before the first period. Both these archives demanded a new temporal retreat: back to the institutionalization of Brazilian art teaching practices under the responsibility of the Academia Imperial de Belas Artes. The Academia's statutes, regulations and teaching reports were selected to compose a third archive, which covered the period from 1816 to 1931. Moreover, in order to contextualize the narrative contours that preceded the art teachings institutionalization in Brazil, there is a fourth archive, consisting of discourses in Portugal regarding the art importance in the Court, which anticipated the foundation of the Academia Imperial de Belas Artes. The scrutiny of this archival data made it possible to analyze how the forging of the hand and the investment in a type of internalized gaze sustained a governmentalized emphasis on educational practices around art. In this direction, the belief rarely placed under suspicion of the beneficial effects of art in the educational field has been renovating notions/slogans, such as creativity and expression, which engender artistic-pedagogical pastoral narratives around mottos such as freedom, emancipation, etc. With the intent to make a shift away from an essentialist and ascending historicization of the Brazilian art education field, the crucial concern of the investigation was to produce sometimes through the recurrence and in others trough the disuse of certain teleological appeals a critical overview of the current pedagogical thought, thus operating in favor of the constitution of a whole other history of the encounter between art and education in Brazil.
