Abstract in English
The present study consists of a historical-philosophical approach on the public role of the intellectual, electing Michel Foucault's critical practice as both theoretical and methodological inspiration as the main object of analysis. The investigative problem focuses on some displacements suffered by intellectual practice since the eighteenth century, establishing a relationship between criticism, truth and education to describe them as part of a process of governmentalization of society. To this end, the investigation resulted in three analytical movements. The first one is devoted to mapping historical and sociological literature on intellectuals role of the last decades of the twentieth century, inventing sets of recurring dilemmas about the relationship between knowledge/thinker and power/institution, as well as diagnosing discursive excess of politicizing content from the 1970s on, so as to highlight the critical-truth equation as a nexus of resistance/emancipation to institutional power relations. In a second analytical movement, the research steps back in time in order to describe the literary, journalistic and formative origins of critical practice, crossed by a conception of cultural (self)formation (Bildung) referring to the discourse of enlightenment (Aufklärung). Through this step back, the two general features that would characterize critical discourse in Modernity are unveiled: one of political and bellicose content and one of educational or instructional intent. If the first mode of critical discourse would establish an antagonistic relation to the reason of State, attributed as the birth of the modern intellectual, the latter would initially aim to promote a critical culture among the literate men and then claim to be the formative power of the subjects/citizens, supposedly emancipating them from classical power relations. With the historical shift of critical practice, the research aimed to highlight an intricate game of education of the self and the others through which a broad teaching expertise would result in a logic of population governance. Finally, in the third analytical movement of this research, Foucault's intellectual-educational practice, especially his teaching activity, is taken as an occasion for the final thoughts on how the French thinker took part in the above-mentioned debate about the social place of intellectuals. The argument here assumes the tensioning of the lineages of both politicization and educationalism of critical activity, thus demonstrating how the French thinker stubbornly refused to second political and pedagogical models of intellectual practice allegedly freer, sometimes because engaged, sometimes because they are not institutionalized , legating, in turn, problematological procedures of investigation and teaching in solidarity with a way of addressing the present in a fearless way.
