Abstract in English
The research project that resulted in the elaboration of this study is interconnected with the researchers 21 years of professional experience in Education in penitentiary spaces. It is permeated by interpretations grounded on theoretical references, which support the understanding of legal principles, concepts, and notions, such as: every persons right to education; the challenges of offering Educação de Jovens e Adultos [Young People and Adults Education EJA] in penitentiaries; the discontinuities in the schooling path of EJAs target audience, especially women and men who enter the prison system and search within it the opportunity to go back to school to continue, and possibly complete, their basic education. The research projects general theme focused on analyzing the perceptions of women and men deprived of freedom regarding the process of education within two prison units in Santa Catarina: the Female Prison of Florianópolis and the Penitentiary of Florianópolis in two moments of field research 2010 and 2018. The data was collected by being immersed in the aforementioned units and through semi-structured interviews with current and former students of Escola do Complexo Penitenciário de Florianópolis [School of the Penitentiary Complex of Florianópolis], linked to Centro de Jovens e Adultos [Center for Young People and Adults CEJA] of Florianópolis. The interviews were conducted and recorded on audio within the prison units. One unit the Penitentiary of Florianópolis has exclusively male population, while the other the Female Prison of Florianópolis is exclusively female. The literal transcription of the interviews constituted the empirical material to focus the qualitative analysis based on the theorical methodological perspective for approaching the Content Analysis, which sought to understand the perceptions expressed, by means of the personal testimonies, about the sense of studying while in prison for men and women deprived of freedom. The results pointed out, with supportive evidence found in the subjects discourses, that women going back to studying is, above all, an act of reconciliation with family, of demonstrating the desire of achieving social credibility and positively influence the school life of their children and grandchildren. For men, this gambit is linked mainly to their future life outside of prison, with the perspective of professionalization and world of work.
