Abstract in English
This research has as object of study the use of the language of humor as a form of critical expression to the changes in the structure of education proposed by Reforma Sampaio Dória, approved by Law no. 1.750, on December 8, 1920. Most of the selected humor material comes in the form of caricatures and cartoons by the cartoonist Voltolino pseudonym most commonly used by the italian-brazilian Lemmo Lemmi thus constituting the most relevant documentary corpus. The humor language has been set into a communication feature that was often used by humoristic and variety journals. Three periodicals were analyzed, which presented a larger volume of cartoons of Voltolino, and which brought the theme education with some highlight: A Cigarra, Vida Paulista and O Parafuso. In addition to the graphic humor, ironic texts and verses were also mentioned, alluding directly to the education reform, or to issues related to it such as illiteracy, teacher training, didatic teaching. Voltolino's humor proved to be a shrewd vehicle of criticism by making use of the inversion feature, placing the reader in touch with the contradictions present in political discourses. The understanding of this humorous language was realized in the dialogue with the great press and in the treatment that it dispensed to the controversies raised by the reform. For that, the newspapers were analyzed O Estado de S. Paulo, A Gazeta, Correio Paulistano and O Combate. In this way, we sought to look at humor within its historicity.
